Christina Smith

When young I was what some might call 'a magical child', capable of 'magical thinking'. This meant that, among other things, I seemed to be able to form connections and develop friendships with flowers, insects, plants, fungi and the elements. Thankfully this ability remained with me. When I later studied Natural History Illustration I was as a result able to explore my connection with the natural world in different, some might say unusual ways, than I otherwise probably would have done, were it not for my early 'magical' perceptions.

Living at the gateway of the Purbeck I have an abundance of special places to study the native wild plant species. The meadows of Durlston are a particular inspiration of mine. The magnificance of the diversity of flowers and herbs are breathtaking and I wish I could reproduce every one of them in order to highlight the 'teachings' they have to share with human beings.

I'm often drawn to craft a particular plant or fungi. It is 'through the making' that I connect deeply to every aspect of each plant I work on. It is, in this way, that I hope to invoke the spirit of the Green One into my sculptures, in order to help those who buy the pieces to bring sacred nature back into their homes.

Each sculpture is hamade and one of a kind. Wood, slate and stone is locally sorced when avilable.

Important Note

Every respect is paid to nature when making a sculpt It is never my intent to destroy a plant or pick a rare Wild Flower or Fungi. My sculpts are mostly made through my own drawings and information gained by detailed photos. There are times when it is appropriate to cut a flower for more anaylysis but this is only done when the flower is nearly at the end of its life or seeds have dispersed, again this does not apply to rare and protected Wild Flowers.
